KP directs public, private buildings to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities
PESHAWAR, Sep 30 (APP):The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has directed public and private institutions to ensure safe, convenient and barrier-free access to buildings and essential services for persons with disabilities.
The directive was issued by the Department of Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment here on the instructions of Advisor to the Chief Minister Malik Liaqat Ali Khan, following concerns raised by persons with disabilities during his visits to various districts.
The department has asked all administrative secretaries, commissioners and deputy commissioners to ensure that government offices, public places and other essential facilities provide independent access to persons with disabilities.
The institutions have been directed to install accessible ramps and suitable slopes, provide handrails and ensure entrances and doors are designed to facilitate wheelchair users, according to the official communication.
The department said the measures were aimed at addressing difficulties faced by persons with disabilities in accessing public facilities and ensuring their dignified participation in society.
Malik Liaqat Ali Khan said persons with disabilities were an important part of society and that equal, safe and dignified access to public facilities was essential for promoting their independence and inclusion.
