MANSEHRA, Jul 17 (APP):A new Knowledge and Research Center has been established at Hazara University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences under the Water Resource Accountability in Pakistan (WRAP) project, funded by the UK’s FCDO and implemented by WWF-Pakistan.
The center aims to improve water governance, raise climate change awareness, and promote Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for water issues in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
The center was officially inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ghulam Mujtaba Shah and WRAP Team Lead Engineer Nek Alam. The ceremony was attended by faculty, students, WWF representatives, and government officials.
Prof. Shah emphasized the center’s role in supporting sustainable natural resource management, research, and community outreach. Engineer Nek Alam highlighted its potential in bridging academic research with real-world environmental action. Dr. Huma, Senior Research Officer at WWF, mentioned that the center would foster youth-led research, focusing on sustainable solutions and addressing challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly women.
The center will equip students with skills to conduct research on climate resilience and water conservation, while also engaging communities for long-term impact. Dr. Asif Javed, Head of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, stated the initiative would strengthen the university’s research capacity and help address Pakistan’s growing water and climate challenges
