BAHAWALPUR, Nov 21 (APP):The Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB) has achieved a historic milestone by securing the 847th position in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2026.
This represents a remarkable rise from its previous placement in the 1181–1200 range, positioning IUB among the fastest-growing global institutions in sustainable development, environmental research, and social impact.
In addition to its impressive global ranking, IUB has also strengthened its national and regional standing, now ranked 9th in Pakistan and 281st in Asia. The university’s overall score saw a significant jump, increasing from 38.5 to 57.2, reflecting substantial improvements across all major performance indicators. This progress underscores IUB’s unwavering commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and its ongoing efforts to create a more environmentally sustainable and inclusive campus.
IUB’s standout performance in the rankings is particularly notable in the areas of Social Impact, where it earned a score of 64.9, and Knowledge Exchange, with an impressive score of 82.2. These results highlight the university’s active community engagement and academic outreach. The institution also performed strongly in Health and Wellbeing (74.6) and Equality (70.2), reinforcing its dedication to student welfare, accessibility, and diversity. In Environmental Research, IUB scored 70.1, and in Good Governance, it achieved 63.3, reflecting its commitment to ethical and transparent institutional practices.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamran hailed the achievement as a defining moment for the university, stressing that the leap from the 1200s to the top 850 globally affirms IUB’s strategic vision. “This ranking validates our ongoing commitment to societal service, particularly in areas such as Knowledge Exchange and Health and Wellbeing,” he said.
Director of the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), Prof. Dr. M. Asadullah Madni, expressed his gratitude to the entire IUB community, including Deans, Chairpersons, faculty, administrative teams, and directorates, for their collective efforts. He also acknowledged the contributions of several key initiatives, including the SDGs Collaboration Centre, Consortium on Climate Change, Sustainability and Conservation, CIDS, ORIC, AS&RB, Planning and Development, the Enabling Centre, Accessibility Centre, Estate Care, and the Green Campus Project. Additionally, he praised the roles of the Occupational Safety and Health Unit, Women Health Care Centre, Maternity Home, and Medical and Health Division in advancing the university’s sustainability and welfare initiatives.
With top rankings in Environmental Research (8th in Pakistan) and Impact of Education (5th in Pakistan), IUB continues to strengthen its academic mission and demonstrate that Pakistani universities can excel on the global stage in addressing critical global challenges. This achievement further solidifies IUB’s position as a leading institution dedicated to sustainable development and societal progress.
