ISLAMABAD, Jul 10 (APP):The Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA), in collaboration with the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has launched a city-wide campaign to inspect and test vehicle emissions.
The initiative aims to reduce carbon monoxide levels from vehicle smoke and ensure cleaner air across the capital.
According to the spokesman of ICT administration, the campaign formally began with the inspection of ITA Chairman Irfan Memon’s vehicle. After passing the test, a clearance sticker was issued and placed on the official car, setting the tone for the rest of the drive.
According to officials, the campaign includes joint inspections by the Islamabad administration and EPA Punjab. Advanced emission testing equipment is being used to measure carbon monoxide levels in vehicle smoke, with a limit set at six percent.
EPA Punjab’s Emission Testing System Head Sajid Bashir provided a detailed briefing during the launch. He said that each vehicle passing the test will receive a scannable clearance sticker. These stickers can be verified digitally to ensure compliance.
Chairman Irfan Memon confirmed that the inspection drive will cover all vehicles operated by the Islamabad district administration. A full round of testing for official government vehicles parked at the Pak Secretariat is scheduled for tomorrow.
Under the guidelines set by the transport authority, any vehicle emitting carbon monoxide levels up to six percent will receive a clearance sticker. Vehicles exceeding this limit will be issued a warning. Irfan Memon emphasized that repeat violations will lead to action, including possible fines or restrictions.
In the next phase of the campaign, the focus will shift to private vehicles. Inspections will be carried out at various bus terminals and traffic checkpoints across the city. This move is aimed at monitoring the emission levels of public and private transport used by residents.
The authorities aim to promote responsible vehicle maintenance and reduce harmful emissions from transport sources. The joint effort also seeks to improve air quality by ensuring vehicles meet environmental standards.
The EPA team stated that all testing is being conducted using modern technology to ensure accurate readings. They also highlighted that the use of scannable stickers adds a layer of accountability and monitoring to the system.
Officials reiterated that the initiative is not just limited to official vehicles. In the coming days, public transport and private cars will also be checked to ensure compliance with the set carbon monoxide standards.
The campaign will continue in phases, and motorists are encouraged to maintain their vehicles in good condition to avoid warnings or penalties. The transport authority warned that failure to act on emission warnings will result in enforcement action without further notice.
Through this campaign, the Islamabad administration is seeking to address the growing issue of vehicular pollution and its impact on public health. With the use of digital monitoring and strict thresholds, the city is moving towards a more accountable and cleaner transport system.
