ISLAMABAD, Nov 25 (APP):The Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) has launched a strict enforcement drive in the federal capital to maintain a stable Air Quality Index (AQI), and to curb vehicle emissions and reduce pollution levels by inspecting 63 vehicles, issuing 23 fines, and shifting 9 vehicles to police stations within the past 24 hours.
As part of the campaign, inspection teams set up checkpoints at various locations across the city, focusing on vehicles contributing to air pollution.
According to officials, a total of 63 vehicles were inspected during the last 24 hours. Out of these, 23 were fined for violating emission standards, while 9 vehicles were transferred to police stations due to severe violations. The ITA said that the action aims to ensure that no smoke-emitting vehicle is allowed to operate on city roads.
The authority has made the Vehicle Emission Clearance Certificate mandatory for all drivers. Transport officials said that drivers must carry valid certificates to confirm their vehicles meet emission requirements. Teams have been directed to verify certificates at checkpoints and take immediate action against violators.
Chairman Islamabad Transport Authority Irfan Memon instructed teams to submit daily progress reports on inspections, fines, and enforcement activity. He said the initiative is part of a broader effort to control air pollution and improve public health in the capital.
Memon said that smoke-emitting vehicles pose a risk to the city’s air quality and cannot be allowed to operate under any circumstances. He added that vehicles found contributing to pollution will face strict action, including fines and impoundment.
The ITA’s campaign includes daily operations without discrimination, covering public transport, commercial vehicles, and private cars. Officials said the enforcement teams are working in coordination with traffic police to ensure uninterrupted checks at key intersections and high-traffic routes.
Drivers have been advised to maintain their vehicles, ensure timely servicing, and obtain the required emission clearance certificate. The authority has also urged transport owners to avoid using outdated or poorly maintained vehicles that fail to meet environmental standards.
The enforcement drive will continue in the coming days, with the ITA planning to expand its checkpoint network across the city. The administration said the focus is on long-term improvement in air quality and compliance with emission rules.
Officials encouraged citizens to support the initiative by reporting smoke-emitting vehicles through the ITA complaint system. They added that public cooperation will help maintain cleaner air and reduce pollution-related risks.
The Islamabad Transport Authority said it remains committed to consistent and strict action as part of its strategy to keep the city’s air clean.
