International Thalassemia Day awareness walk held

FAISALABAD, May 08 (APP):In connection with the International Thalassemia Day observance, an awareness walk was organised from the District Council Chowk to the Clock Tower here on Friday, under the auspices of Ali Zeb Foundation, an organisation that provides treatment facilities for blood diseases.
Additional Commissioner (Coordination) Tanveer Murtaza led the walk. A large number of students from various schools, colleges and universities participated in the walk.
The children suffering from thalassemia, parents, lawyers and people from different walks of life also present in the walk.
The organization’s Executive Director Shahid Ali Zaidi, Director Saadullah Shahid, Coordinator Miss Saima, and other members also participated in the walk.
Talking to the participants, ED Zaib Foundation Syed Shahid Ali Zaidi said that it is extremely sad that even today more than 6,000 children are being born with thalassemia disease every year in Pakistan. Many countries in the world have made their nations safe from this disease through effective awareness campaigns about this disease, however, Pakistan is still far behind in this regard, he said.
Zaidi said that more than 5% of the people in Pakistan are carriers of thalassemia and due to lack of proper awareness, it is difficult to control the disease.
Coordinator Miss Saima said that the organization is currently providing the best medical facilities and blood transfusion services to more than 8500 patients suffering from blood diseases in 5 cities of the Punjab province. However, the permanent solution to this problem is to create awareness about thalassemia among the public and ensure that thalassemia carriers do not marry each other.
