Home Minister visits central procession in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, Jun 26 (APP):The Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar visited the central procession of 10th Muharram here on Friday and reviewed the security arrangements as well.
Talking to the media, the minister said the mourning processions of 10th Muharram were organized peacefully across the province on Friday.
He added that, in view of the prevalent security situation in Pakistan, adequate security arrangements were put in place for Muharram.
He appreciated the ulema for extending complete cooperation to the government and the people for their peaceful participation in the processions and majalis.
The Home Minister expressed sadness over the deaths of some people in the province’s largest procession in Rohri, Sukkur district, on Thursday.
According to him, heat stroke caused during a hot day while attending a highly crowded procession caused the deaths, besides leaving over a dozen people fainted.
He apprised that more than 53,000 policemen performed security duties in Muharram in addition to the deployment of Sindh Rangers.
Lanjar said the police kept a close eye on the elements who provoke sectarianism during Muharram and prevent such persons from inciting the people.
Responding to a question, he claimed that a safe city project of global standard was being set up in Karachi through the funding of the Home Department. The minister shared that a similar project will also be started in Hyderabad through a public-private partnership.
He said there were 165,000 policemen in the province and that the provincial government was vetting proposals for increasing their salaries, claiming that the salaries of Sindh police were already higher than those of their counterparts in Punjab.
Replying to another question, he said rumours are being spread about changes in the Sindh Cabinet.
Nevertheless, he added, the leadership of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had the authority to change portfolios.
Commenting on the statement of a MPA of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) concerning dead bodies packed in gunny bags, the Home Minister said that statement was being investigated seriously because it was given in the Sindh Assembly.
The minister was accompanied by Mayor Kashif Ali Shoro, Commissioner Fayaz Abbasi and other officials.
