KOT ADDU, Jul 23 (APP):A major crackdown on price hike and artificial sugar shortages was launched by Deputy Commissioner Munawar Abbas Bukhari on Wednesday.
As part of the operation, four shopkeepers involved in hoarding sugar and selling it at inflated prices were arrested and FIRs were lodged against them after taking them into custody.
In a single day, price control teams raided 127 shops across the district. As a result, 21 shopkeepers were found guilty of profiteering. Heavy on-the-spot fines totaling Rs 159,000 were imposed on 25 violators.
The Deputy Commissioner has directed Price Control Magistrates to take strict and impartial action against the violators. He emphasized that those exploiting the public by creating artificial price hikes or by under-weighing goods will not be given any leniency.
“Those who sell commodities above government-set prices will face jail,” stated the DC. “Not only small retailers, but large warehouses and shopping malls involved in sugar hoarding will also be sealed, he added.”
The crackdown was part of a broader initiative to protect consumers from exploitation and ensure the availability of essential commodities at fair prices.
