LAHORE, Jan 08 (APP):The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) Lahore recently hosted a guest lecture titled “Evolving Global Order: China-US Reset” , bringing together academics, intellectuals and domain experts to examine shifting global power dynamics and their implications for international stability.
In his opening address, Director of CASS Lahore, Dr. Ahsan Abbas, emphasized that the changing global order requires a balanced approach, one that harmonizes competition and cooperation among major powers to ensure global stability.
Eminent economist and former finance minister Shahid Javed Burki highlighted the fundamental transformation underway in the global order. He noted that China’s rapid economic rise is increasingly challenging U.S. dominance. Burki contrasted China’s state-led development model and heavy investment in technology with the U.S.’s market-driven approach and reliance on coercive power to secure its strategic interests. He also stressed the importance of a stable and confident Pakistan-China partnership, warning against external pressures and media narratives that could undermine long-term economic cooperation.
In his concluding remarks, President of CASS Lahore, Air Marshal (Retd) Asim Suleiman, discussed how the China-US relationship is the central factor reshaping the strategic, economic, and institutional landscape of the 21st century. While acknowledging that the strategic rivalry between the two powers is structural and long-lasting, he emphasized the importance of cooperation in areas of shared interest to maintain global stability. He also noted that technology competition has become a major fault line, requiring a delicate balance between security concerns and economic efficiency to prevent fragmentation of the global economy.
The event concluded with an interactive session that addressed Pakistan’s balancing policy between China and the United States, the future of CPEC 2.0, and the strategic positioning of regional actors amid intensifying great power competition. Participants praised CASS Lahore for hosting a timely and insightful discussion on these critical global issues.
