Emissions check tightens in ICT: SOPs issued for vehicle inspections

ISLAMABAD, Jul 28 (APP):The Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA) has issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the vehicle emission testing system aimed at controlling smoke-emitting vehicles in the federal capital.
According to the newly issued guidelines, vehicles manufactured in 2022 or later will be exempt from the emission testing process for now. However, all vehicles produced before 2022 must undergo mandatory inspection in the first phase.
The SOPs detail that vehicles will be checked for carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. A sticker will be issued only to those vehicles whose emissions contain less than 6% CO. If a vehicle emits more than this limit, it will be issued a warning.
The ITA has clarified that any vehicle without the official sticker will be subject to action under the new SOPs. Field teams will begin checking for compliance on the roads starting today.
The new procedures were approved by ITA Chairman Irfan Nawaz Memon. Officials said the goal is to minimize harmful vehicle emissions and ensure cleaner air across the city.
The SOPs are part of a broader effort to monitor and regulate vehicle emissions through systematic inspections. These inspections are being carried out at designated points across Islamabad, where transport authority teams are actively checking vehicles for compliance.
The authorities have urged vehicle owners to ensure their cars meet the required emission standards to avoid penalties. They also advised regular maintenance of vehicles to reduce smoke levels and contribute to a healthier environment.
This initiative comes as concerns grow over air quality in urban areas. The ITA emphasized that regular checks will continue and that more phases of the inspection drive will follow in the coming weeks.
