Effective measures being taken to combat smog: Commissioner

FAISALABAD, Oct 08 (APP):An awareness seminar on the causes, challenges and sustainable solutions of smog in urban areas was held at Government College Women University, Faisalabad.
Commissioner Raja Jahangir Anwar was chief guest, while Vice- Chancellor Prof. Dr. Kanwal Amin (Sitara Imtiaz), Additional Commissioner (Coordination) Aamir Raza, faculty and students were present on the occasion.
The commissioner said that effective measures are being taken at the government level to combat smog, adding, “Environmental changes are happening rapidly, however we would have to share our responsibilities in this regard.”
The commissioner mentioned the causes of environmental pollution with statistics, adding that as an industrial hub, two million motorbikes and 3.5 million other vehicles running on the roads are polluting the city’s air. The soil and sand particles rising from under-construction buildings also cause smog, he mentioned.
He said that the higher education sector is a major avenue for development and urged the graduates, post-graduates and PhDs to bring about social changes with their knowledge.
The commissioner said that hundreds of tons of waste is being disposed of daily under the Shatra Punjab program in the district.
He asked the female students not to limit them to only degree holders, come out and play their role in refreshing the environment. “The government is providing you with the best infrastructure including quality roads and educational institutions so it is also your responsibility to play their role in the development of the country.”
The commissioner added that currently, 30 electric buses are plying on two routes in the city and another 60 buses will be added to the system in the next two months.
He further said that the government is providing e-bikes to female students also. The female students should take advantage of the facility and apply online for e-bikes.
The commissioner also answered the questions of the female students.
Earlier, the commissioner planted a sapling at the university lawn.
