MULTAN, Jul 27 (APP):Scores of Doctors at Nishtar Medical University organized a walk to sensitize society about the complications of Hepatitis and easy treatment procedures to address the health issue.
The walk and seminar held under the auspices of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in connection with World Hepatitis Day, here on Saturday.
The medical community is raising alarms over the increasing complications associated with hepatitis infections in the country, said doctors while talking to APP. The experts urged swift measures to curb the growing health crisis.
The health professionals highlighted the severity of the situation. “Hepatitis B and C are particularly concerning due to their chronic nature and potential to lead to severe liver damage, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. “We need a robust public health strategy to prevent new infections and manage existing cases effectively.” The citizens should not be afraid of the complication, they hinted as Nishtar Hospital was treating the patients free of cost.
The data indicates a significant ratio of hepatitis cases over the past decade. The medical experts stressed the need for early detection and treatment.
“Many patients present late with advanced liver disease, which complicates treatment and reduces survival rates”, they shared.
Preventive measures, including vaccination for hepatitis B and public awareness campaigns, are crucial. The doctors stressed the importance of vaccination. “Hepatitis B vaccination is a safe and effective way to prevent infection, and it should be included in the routine immunization schedule for all children,” they recommended.
The experts also called for improved screening programs especially in backward areas of south Punjab. “Regular screening, especially for high-risk groups such as healthcare workers and those with a history of blood transfusions, can significantly reduce the burden of disease”, they remarked
Public health initiatives, including awareness campaigns and community outreach programs, are essential to combat the stigma associated with hepatitis. The doctors emphasized the role of education.
“Educating the public about hepatitis transmission, prevention, and treatment is key to controlling this epidemic,” the experts maintained. The patients should visit the gastroenterology ward of Nishtar Hospital for treatment. Every possible facility is being provided to the patients, they stated.
