GIlGIT, Jul 31 (APP): Torrential rains and flash floods have wreaked havoc across Gilgit-Baltistan, prompting the government to declare 37 locations across various districts as calamity-hit zones, according to provincial government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq.
The most severely affected area is Diamer District, where 12 locations have been placed under emergency status. In Gilgit District, 9 locations have been declared disaster-hit, followed by 5 in Ghizer, 4 each in Skardu and Shigar, 2 in Ghanche, and 1 each in Nagar and Kharmang.
Preliminary estimates indicate financial losses exceeding Rs. 20 billion due to the floods. According to the spokesperson, 22 vehicles were swept away, and 10 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives. Additionally, 4 individuals were injured and have received medical treatment. Rescue operations are ongoing to locate 10 to 15 missing tourists.
To address the crisis, the Gilgit-Baltistan government has launched rehabilitation projects worth Rs. 440 million, focusing on the restoration of drinking water supply, electricity, and road connectivity. Relief items, including tents, blankets, food supplies, and kitchen sets, have already been distributed among the affected families.
Faizullah Firaq highlighted that the rehabilitation of 509 damaged homes remains a significant challenge, but assured that the government is fully mobilized to support the victims. He expressed hope that the Prime Minister of Pakistan would soon extend support and compassion to the affected communities.
