Decisions about IWT in Int’l Court of arbitration strengthened Pakistan’s position: Karim
QUETTA, Sep 02 (APP):Focal Person of Prime Minister Youth Program (PMYP) Chaudhry Naeem Karim on Wednesday said that the recent decisions regarding the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in the International Court of Arbitration have strengthened Pakistan’s position and have given a clear message to India that it could not unilaterally suspend the treaty nor could it build water projects in violation of the treaty.
In a statement issued here, senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Chaudhry Naeem Karim said that the International Court of Arbitration has recognized Pakistan’s principled position and made it clear that India could not unilaterally amend or change the Indus Waters Treaty or withdraw from it. This treaty is equally binding on both countries.
He said that this decision has dealt a severe legal blow to Indian stubbornness at the global level and Pakistan’s position has become stronger, Pakistan would never tolerate any illegal construction or water theft on its rivers.
He said that Pakistan had raised objections to India’s construction of the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Plant and subsequent design of the Ratle project.
He noted that the designs of these projects did not meet the requirements of the Indus Waters Treaty, Pakistan wanted to take the matter to the arbitration court, while India’s position was that a neutral expert should be appointed for the matter.
He said that however, the arbitration court ruled in 2023 that it had full jurisdiction to hear the dispute.
Mr. Naeem said that the decisions in May and August also clarified the terms of the agreement regarding India’s water projects, their design and water storage limits.
He explained that the latest decision on August 31 clarified the matter further and asked India to stop the construction of projects being built in violation of the agreement.
Chaudhry Naeem Karim said that Pakistan would not give up its rights after the Indus Waters Treaty and the decision of the arbitration court.
