KARACHI, Nov 21 (APP):Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon on Friday said Karachi has seen a 30% reduction in crime compared to last year due to the installation of surveillance cameras, calling it a key step in improving policing and public safety.
He shared these remarks during his visit to Badin, where he inaugurated a new driving licence branch established at the Police Headquarters, according to a news release.
Senior officials, including DIG Driving Licence, SSP Badin and DC Badin, accompanied him. Before the inauguration, the IGP laid floral wreaths at the Police Shuhada Monument and offered prayers.
During the visit, he inspected different sections of the licence branch while the DIG Driving Licence briefed him on its operations. The DIG noted that Badin is the first district, after divisional headquarters, where all facilities including international driving permits will now be available. The new unit becomes the twelth licence branch in Sindh.
IGP Sindh said the branch would greatly benefit the people of Badin, adding that commercial licences would also be issued here. He said the establishment was part of a years-long effort and credited the dedicated officers posted at the branch.
He added that the staff themselves contributed to building the facility.
The IGP highlighted the importance of driving licences and the need for trained, responsible drivers. He said police work round the year, and he wished to see the public respect the force from the heart.
He also announced that, after Karachi, traffic officers in other cities will be equipped with body-worn cameras to monitor violations and record interactions with motorists. He said the police system is being shifted towards digital and faceless processes for greater transparency.
IGP Sindh urged journalists to raise public awareness about installing cameras in homes and businesses, emphasising that surveillance is crucial for safety, evidence collection, and post-incident identification.
