LAHORE, Oct 24 (APP):An enforcement team of Punjab Food Authority’s Dairy Safety Department has launched a grand operation against milk adulteration inspecting 915,715 litres of milk and discarding 110,050 litres found fake or adulterated.
The PFA also registered 10 FIRs and penalised 107 violators during the crackdown. Operation was carried out under the directions of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid.
DG Asim said that the discarded milk was adulterated with water, milk powder and vegetable ghee, posing serious health risks to consumers. He said that early morning checkpoints were established at multiple locations across Lahore where milk was tested on the spot and unsafe milk was immediately disposed of.
Director general said that a total of 1,892 dairy units, suppliers and collection centres were inspected during which fines amounting to Rs. 862,000 were imposed over poor hygiene, adulteration practices and absence of mandatory records. He stated that the continuous crackdown has significantly reduced adulteration trends and improved milk quality in the province.
He further stated that since January 1, a total of 2,274,688 litres of adulterated milk have been destroyed and 861 FIRs lodged against those involved in adulteration. He said that PFA is working on a comprehensive plan to introduce full traceability of the milk supply chain from production to consumer delivery.
He has requested the public to support the PFA in eliminating the adulteration mafia and report to the PFA on its 1223 helpline number in case of any complaints.
