RAWALPINDI, Jan 30 (APP): Commissioner Rawalpindi Engineer Aamir Khattak on Friday directed teams at the Union Council level to carry out a thorough inspection of manholes in their respective areas and submit detailed reports within 24 hours.

“Based on these reports, tasking will be undertaken to ensure that no manhole remains uncovered,” the commissioner said while presiding over a review meeting on Performance Monitoring Indicators here at his office.

The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Coordination Xenia Humayun, Director General of the Punjab Housing Authority Ahmed Hassan Ranjha, Managing Director WASA, Director Health, Chief Officer Metropolitan Corporation Rawalpindi, and other concerned officers, while Deputy Commissioners of Murree, Attock, Chakwal, and Jhelum joined via video link.

Commissioner Khattak said manhole covers and cleanliness were key performance indicators under the Punjab Chief Minister’s Performance Monitoring framework due to their direct impact on public safety.

He urged the public to immediately report any open or damaged manholes to the relevant administrative office. He also instructed that all complaints regarding manhole covers and cleanliness must be addressed promptly.

The commissioner stressed that public safety must be prioritised at project sites. He directed that all machinery and ongoing work areas be fully covered and clearly marked with warning signboards to protect passersby. The deputy commissioners were also instructed to ensure cleanliness and administrative measures in their districts and to issue comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) clearly defining responsibilities to ensure accountability in cases of negligence.
