MUZAFFARGARH, Aug 28 (APP):Commissioner Dera Ghazi Khan Ashfaq Ahmad Chaudhry rushed to Muzaffargarh on Thursday amid reports of gradual rise in water level in Chenab river and ordered the administration, police and rescue and relief organizations to remain alert to provide relief to the affected communities as flood emergency looms large, a day ahead of an expected big surge.
Presiding over a meeting at the office of deputy commissioner, he ordered Rescue 1122, administration, Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and Irrigation department to finalize a relief plan urgently.
The commissioner also visited flood control room where he witnessed water level situation and ordered Rescue 1122 and administration to remain alert 24 hours a day.
He asked the irrigation department and administration to make arrangements to strengthen the protection Bunds and for relief operation.
He ordered establishing relief camps in affected areas and to activate local networks to convey information to people about any threat timely.
Deputy commissioner Usman Tahir Jappa informed the commissioner that residents of rural areas that are vulnerable to flood threat have already been told to shift to safer places. He said, Rescue 1122 and the PDMA have been told to finalize relief operation plan.
Commissioner Chaudhry remarked that coordinated efforts be launched to mitigate the sufferings of people and protect their life and property in case of floods.
Meanwhile, on the orders of DPO Syed Ghazanfar Ali Shah, police started evacuating people to safer places from areas facing flood threat. Additional police deployment has been made in areas near river Chenab, a day ahead of expected big surge in water level, to aid rescue and relief operations, the police spokesman said.
RPO Sajjad Hassan Khan is closely monitoring the police operations in riverine areas and the police were in contact with all the relevant departments to extend help to affected people.
