KARACHI, Jul 22 (APP):The Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi chaired a review meeting on Tuesday to evaluate ongoing efforts against price gouging and food adulteration.
Assistant Commissioner Headquarters Rabia Syed briefed the participants on district-wise performance regarding the crackdown on profiteering. From July 13 to July 19, actions were taken against 131 profiteers, with total fines exceeding 1.1 million rupees
According to breakdown of the penalties, 12 violators funeral Rs 199000 in district South, 14 fined Rs 337000 in East, 17 fined Rs 171000 in Central, 13 fined Rs 57000 in West, 30 fined Rs 117000 in Malir, 31 fined Rs 200000 in Korangi and 30 fined Rs 66000 in district Keamari.
Assistant Commissioners reportedly checked prices at 1,514 locations across the city.
The meeting also reviewed the pricing mechanism of fruits and vegetables, specifically expressing dissatisfaction with the current auction system for potatoes and onions.
Commissioner Naqvi emphasized the need to improve the price determination process to provide relief to citizens and instructed the Market Committee to play a proactive role in ensuring fair pricing.
Deputy Commissioner East, Abrar Jaffar, was directed to lead a coordinated effort with the Market Committee to reform the auction system at the vegetable market.
The meeting also decided to convene a meeting of the Market Committee immediately, and all other Deputy Commissioners were also instructed to contribute towards improving the system. Assistant Commissioners involved in price-setting committees were tasked with submitting analytical reports on auction reforms and transparency.
Additionally, Assistant Deputy Director of the Sindh Food Authority, Basheer Khan, informed the meeting about the anti-adulteration campaign. In response to complaints of adulterated milk and tea, over 100 samples have been collected and are currently being tested in laboratories. The Food Authority is expected to present a detailed report in the next session.
Additional Commissioner-I Karachi Ghulam Mehdi Shah, Additional Commissioner-II Asadullah Khoso, Assistant Commissioner Hazim Bangwar, Assistant Commissioner Bureau of Supply Ali Haider, and others attended the meeting.
