RAWALPINDI, Jun 30 (APP):Commissioner Rawalpindi, Engineer Aamir Khattak, has directed all Deputy Commissioners to expedite preparations for the upcoming monsoon season and potential flooding, following instructions from Chief Minister Punjab for adopting proactive measures and making emergency contingency plans.
The directive came as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) forecasts 20-25% above-normal rainfall across Punjab, with northeastern divisions expecting 40-60% heavier rainfall. Fluctuations in Chenab river water levels due to water released from India’s Salal Dam has further heighten flood risks.
During a disaster management meeting at the Commissioner’s Office, attended by Additional Commissioner Syed Nazarat Ali, Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi, Rescue 1122, and PDMA representatives, the commissioner emphasized proactive measures. He instructed the activation of monsoon contingency plans, 24/7 control room operations, and the cleaning of drains and sewerage lines by WASA and local government departments. Rapid response teams, drainage pumps, generators, and machinery must be fully operational, with special de-watering arrangements for low-lying areas along Muharram procession routes.
The Commissioner also ordered emergency alarm systems and relocation plans for urban flooding risks.
The Irrigation Department and Rescue 1122 were directed for continuous monitoring of river water levels to ensure timely updates to all districts.
