PESHAWAR, Jul 30 (APP): Advisor to KP CM on Health Ihtisham Ali, paid an official visit to the Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) here on Wednesday.
He was warmly received by Chief Executive Officer Noor Wazir, Deputy CEO Nasir Afridi, and other concerned officials.
During the visit, the Health Advisor was given a comprehensive briefing on the institution’s departments, training programs, and overall performance.
It was shared that PGMI currently offers 45 different specialization diploma programs aimed at enhancing the skills of doctors across the province. All these programs are paid positions.
Admissions are conducted through an entry test organized by the Educational Testing and Evaluation Agency (ETEA), with successful candidates placed in various teaching hospitals strictly on merit.
Furthermore, he was informed that over 1,100 doctors had qualified through ETEA for 800 paid FCPS (Fellowship of College of Physicians and Surgeons) specialized training positions.
These trainee doctors are assigned to relevant teaching hospitals for four to five years of training. Their salaries and administrative matters are managed by the Associate Deans of their respective institutions.
Ihtisham Ali also visited PGMI’s Skills Lab and inspected the modern medical equipment available there. He was informed that this is the first skills lab established by a public-sector institution in Pakistan, dedicated to providing hands-on training to doctors.
On the occasion, the Advisor announced that a review of the PGMI Act has been initiated to further strengthen and empower the institute, aiming to effectively address the shortage of specialist doctors in the province. He emphasized that the devolution of powers to lower levels will help institutions function more efficiently and make timely decisions.
He also underlined the importance of implementing a strong reward and accountability mechanism within institutions, enabling them to evolve progressively through self-assessment and institutional development.
