LAHORE, Oct 08 (APP): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday inaugurated the first-ever government-run public transport system in Pakpattan, marking an unprecedented development in the 750-year-old history of the historic city known as the Land of Baba Farid.
Under the new initiative, an electric bus service comprising 15 buses will operate on three urban routes, from General Bus Stand Pakpattan to Banga Hayat, Arifwala, and Noor Pur Syal, with five buses allocated to each route, said a handout issued here.
Following the inauguration, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif travelled on the city’s first electric bus from Hazrat Bakhtiar Kaki Chowk to SP Chowk, symbolizing a new era of eco-friendly and accessible public transport for the people of Pakpattan.
She received a warm and historic welcome as citizens showered flower petals on the electric bus. Enthusiastic crowds, including women and youth, lined the streets chanting slogans such as “Sab Ton Aala – Punjab Di Wazir-e-Aala” and “Welcome to the Land of Baba Farid.”
Members of the Suthra Punjab sanitation initiative also joined the celebration, displaying banners in solidarity. A young participant holding a pencil sketch of the late Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif drew special attention, symbolizing the continuity of political legacy. The electric bus route was also lined with newly deployed modern sanitation vehicles, underscoring the Punjab government’s commitment to a cleaner and greener province.
During the ceremony, the CM personally visited assembly members at their seats, exchanging greetings and expressing gratitude. On her way back from the stage, she walked towards the general public instead of proceeding directly to her vehicle, acknowledging their affection and support. She thanked children, women, and youth for their overwhelming participation, turning the event into a memorable celebration of community spirit and progressive leadership.
