LAHORE, Nov 09 (APP): Coordinator to Federal Tax Ombudsman Saif Ur Rehman Sunday warned that rapid population growth, coupled with climate change, is posing severe and multifaceted threats to Pakistan’s economy.
Addressing a seminar on “Impact of Climate Change and Growing Population on Pakistan’s Economy,” he said uncontrolled population growth is putting immense pressure on the country’s limited resources, aggravating unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity. This, he added, undermines social services, human development, and the benefits of economic progress.
Saif Ur Rehman highlighted the growing impact of climate change, including floods, droughts, heatwaves, and declining agricultural productivity, which further disrupt livelihoods, particularly in rural areas.
He urged the government to adopt coordinated measures, including population management strategies through education, awareness campaigns, and family planning programs, alongside climate-resilient policies to mitigate environmental degradation. He also stressed promoting renewable energy, efficient water management, and green technologies, while ensuring equitable distribution of resources, expanding social safety nets, and fostering inclusive economic opportunities.
“Only by curbing population growth and addressing the climate crisis can Pakistan secure a stable, resilient, and sustainable economic future for its people,” he concluded.
