LAHORE, Mar 03 (APP):The city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 124, placing it in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category.
At this level, individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, children, and the elderly may begin to experience adverse health effects, while the general public is less likely to be significantly impacted. However, prolonged exposure can still pose risks, particularly for those who spend extended periods outdoors.
Meanwhile, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was measured at nine times higher than the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended annual guideline value. Such elevated levels of PM2.5 — tiny particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and even enter the bloodstream — increase the likelihood of respiratory irritation, aggravated asthma, reduced lung function, and other cardiovascular complications.
Health experts advise limiting outdoor activities, wearing protective masks when necessary, and ensuring indoor air quality is maintained during periods of heightened pollution.
