Citizens welcome Rs100 petrol subsidy
LAHORE, Sep 16 (APP):Citizens on Wednesday broadly welcomed the Prime Minister’s Special Fuel Relief Scheme, under which a Rs100 per litre subsidy is being provided on petrol for motorcycles, auto-rickshaws, motorcycle rickshaws and cars up to 800cc, describing the initiative as a much-needed relief amid rising fuel prices.
The APP spoke to several road users at different petrol stations following implementation of the subsidy, with commuters, motorcycle riders and drivers expressing satisfaction over the reduction in their fuel expenses.
Abdullah, a student of Information Technology University and a motorcycle user, said at a PSO petrol station in Johar Town that he was happy with the subsidy as his university was far from his home and rising petrol prices had significantly increased his commuting expenses. He said the subsidized fuel would provide considerable support to students like him.
Another motorcycle rider, Salman, who works with ride-hailing applications, said higher fuel prices had made it increasingly difficult for him to continue his work. He said the subsidized petrol would help reduce his daily expenses and support his livelihood.
Sajid Ali, a government employee, who was travelling in his 800cc car with his family, also appreciated the relief. He said he regularly used the car to pick and drop his daughters to college and university, adding that high fuel prices had placed an additional burden on his household budget. The subsidized petrol, he said, would make commuting somewhat more affordable.
Dr Ahsaan Zafar, President Anjuman-e-Naujawanan-e-Pakistan, appreciated the Prime Minister’s decision, saying the relief measure had provided a sense of satisfaction to the people. He also appreciated the government’s efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Gulf, saying the situation had disturbed the entire world.
The relief scheme has been launched against the backdrop of global oil supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions, with the government targeting vulnerable sections of society through the fuel subsidy. The package has also prompted discussion among economists and transport representatives regarding its fiscal cost and long-term sustainability.
