Central Asian Sufism played key role in shaping Islamic thoughts, civilisation

MULTAN, Feb 19 (APP): The Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) organised a significant academic session titled ‘Exploring the Sufi Heritage: Central Asian Perspectives’ under the auspices of its Department of Islamic Studies, Centre for Islamic Research, and Institute of Tasawwuf and Mysticism.
A large number of  faculty members, researchers, and students were in attendance.
The keynote address was delivered by known researcher  Alexander Papas  at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), Paris.
In his comprehensive lecture, he examined the historical evolution, intellectual foundations, and contemporary relevance of the Central Asian Sufi tradition. He explained that Central Asian Sufism has played a pivotal role in shaping Islamic thought and civilization, with its influence continuing to resonate in both academic and spiritual circles today.
Guest scholar Dr. Shams-ur-Rehman from Allama Iqbal Open University,  spoke about the global dimensions of Sufism and its social and spiritual impact. He emphasized the importance of strengthening academic linkages and fostering collaborative research.
In his opening remarks, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Languages,  Dr. Abdul Quddus Suhaib, highlighted the intellectual and cultural importance of Sufism and underscored the need for its scholarly exploration in the contemporary era. He noted that the Sufi tradition of Central Asia represents a luminous chapter in Islamic civilization, whose influence has extended across the wider Muslim world.
Dr. Munazza Hayat, BZU Director  Department of Islamic Studies remarked that such academic engagements provide valuable opportunities for students and faculty to benefit from internationally recognized scholars and to explore new research perspectives.
The lecture concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, reflecting strong engagement from participants. The organizers expressed gratitude to the guest speaker and reaffirmed their commitment to hosting similar scholarly events in the future to promote international academic dialogue.
