RAWALPINDI, Jan 23 (APP):A suspected car lifter was wounded and taken into custody while his accomplice escaped after firing on a police team during a late Thursday night encounter in the New Town area, police said on Friday.
A Rawalpindi Police spokesperson said the personnel attempted to intercept a suspicious car when its occupants opened fire. In the exchange, one suspect was injured and apprehended while the other managed to flee.
The police recovered a car and weapons from the arrested suspect, identified as Adnan. The vehicle had been stolen from the jurisdiction of the New Town Police Station about two months ago. The suspect was also involved in car theft cases in the twin cities, the spokesperson said.
During the firing, a bullet struck Constable Umair, who remained unhurt due to his bulletproof jacket.
Senior police officers arrived at the scene after being informed of the incident, while a search operation was launched in the area to track down the fleeing suspect.
The injured suspect was shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani commended the Superintendent of Police, Rawal, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, New Town, and the New Town police team for confronting armed suspects, arresting a wanted criminal and recovering the stolen vehicle despite coming under fire.
