KARACHI, Jun 01 (APP):Speakers at a commemorative event on Sunday paid rich tribute to the late Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, lauding his unparalleled contributions to Pakistan’s nuclear deterrence and calling for his formal exoneration from allegations made during the era of General Pervez Musharraf.
The event, jointly organized by the Rotary Club Karachi Intracity (RCKI) and the Pakistan Civic Society, was held at the Services Mess and attended by prominent figures from various walks of life. Eminent social activist Mahfooz un Nabi Khan presided over the session, which was also addressed by business magnate Haji Rafiq Pardesi, Chairman of Red Crescent Sindh Rehan Hashmi, Uzma Ismail, Dr Humera, RCKI President Syed Naseem Shah, and Secretary Muhammad Wasim.
In his keynote speech, Mahfooz un Nabi Khan urged the Parliament to officially clear Dr Khan’s name of what he described as “fake and baseless” allegations levied against the nuclear scientist during the military-led regime of General Musharraf. He also called for a posthumous apology to be issued to Dr Khan, who passed away in 2021.
“Developing the atomic bomb was a monumental scientific achievement,” Khan stated. “Its successful test was a logical conclusion of that journey, and Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan was the chief architect of this national triumph.”
He acknowledged the historical roles played by former Prime Ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto—who initiated Pakistan’s nuclear program—and Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, under whose leadership the country conducted its first nuclear tests on May 28, 1998. Khan also praised the moral and financial support extended by the late Saudi King Faisal and other regional leaders in aiding Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions.
