FAISALABAD, Feb 03 (APP): The suitable time for cultivating the spring sugarcane crop is from February 15 to March 15, said agriculture experts here on Tuesday.
According to an agriculture department spokesperson, to get better yield from spring cultivation, heavy loamy soil is suitable for having good water drainage and organic matter is also found in sufficient quantities. However, spring sugarcane could also be cultivated in light and low fertile soil with proper care, however bean and sod land are not suitable for sugarcane cultivation.
The experts said that sugarcane roots go deep into the ground, so it is necessary to prepare the soil to a depth of at least one foot. For proper spread of the roots of sugarcane and easy access to food, the soil should be soft, rich and well-leveled.
They advised the farmers to prepare the soil by deep plough and before preparing the soil, add well-rotted cow dung and prepare the soil with a rotavator chisel plough twice in opposite directions and a normal plough 3 to 4 times.
Chisel ploughing improves water drainage and loosens the soil particles, which helps the roots of the plants to grow deeper.
The experts further said that in case of timely sowing and other suitable conditions, the farmers should sown 30,000 two-eyed or 20,000 three-eyed seeds per acre.
This number can be obtained from about 100 to 120 maunds of seeds in thick varieties and 80 to 100 maunds of seeds in thin varieties.
