Balochistan ramps up earthquake preparedness under 2026 national guidelines

QUETTA, Feb 26 (APP):The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan has convened a high-level consultative meeting to implement the newly issued “Earthquake Guidelines 2026” prepared by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response capacity across the province.
The meeting brought together representatives from all relevant administrative departments and agencies. Officials outlined institutional roles and responsibilities to ensure coordinated action in mitigating earthquake risks and responding effectively to emergencies.
Special attention was given to seismically sensitive districts where strong tremors have recently been recorded. Since early 2026, earthquakes measuring up to 5.6 magnitude have struck Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, and Jafarabad, sparking widespread concern among residents.
Experts from seismic monitoring centers cautioned that the possibility of significant aftershocks or even stronger quakes cannot be ruled out. District administrations and rescue agencies in vulnerable areas have therefore been placed on high alert.
Provincial authorities announced a comprehensive safety framework under the 2026 guidelines, with a firm commitment to enforce building codes without compromise. The use of earthquake-resistant technology in all new constructions has been declared mandatory.
Departments have been directed to ensure strict oversight of structural integrity in both public and private projects.
Officials stressed that compliance with modern construction standards is critical to minimizing casualties and infrastructure damage in the event of a major quake.
To reduce potential loss of life, a structured rapid response system has been developed. Plans include forming trained emergency teams and pre-positioning heavy machinery in high-risk districts to enable swift rescue and recovery operations.
Authorities also emphasized the identification and clear marking of emergency evacuation routes in densely populated areas to prevent chaos during disasters.
Recognizing the importance of community preparedness, the administration pledged to launch a province-wide awareness campaign. Citizens will be educated on earthquake safety measures, including identifying safe shelter points and administering basic first aid.
Experts noted that due to Balochistan’s geographic position and active fault lines, precautionary measures are no longer optional but an urgent necessity.
The renewed focus on preparedness reflects a broader effort to build resilience in one of the country’s most seismically vulnerable regions.
