LAHORE, Aug 12 (APP):Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that the events of May 9 were a result of 70 rallies, two long marches, and toxic speeches led by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Speaking at a press conference alongside PML-N leader Hina Pervaiz Butt, Bokhari highlighted the government’s initiatives for women’s rights, noting that thousands of women are receiving assistance through virtual police stations, where female officers exclusively interact with female victims.
Bokhari stressed CM Maryam Nawaz’s zero tolerance on violence against women. Referring to the Sania Zahra case, she mentioned that there were no signs of suicide, instead, evidence pointed to a murder orchestrated by the victim’s mother-in-law and husband, who attempted to disguise it as a suicide.
Bokhari asserted that each case of violence against women will be made an example, ensuring that perpetrators face justice. She declared that domestic violence is unacceptable and that violence against women is a red line for the chief minister.
Regarding the May 9 incident, Bokhari questioned the need for a judicial commission, arguing that the events were not spontaneous but the culmination of a year’s efforts. She pointed to the involvement of PTI members, including Hassaan Niazi and Yasmin Rashid, in the incident.
Bokhari criticized the PTI founder for inciting people to head towards military installations if he was arrested. She compared the situation to England, where even a retweet can result in punishment, and questioned whether Yasmin Rashid did not lead the protests on May 9.
She further criticized the destruction caused during the protests, including setting fire on PTV, burning ambulances and toll plazas.
Bokhari concluded by stating that forgiveness is not an option, and unlike Bangladesh’s students, who had legitimate grievances, KP’s chief minister is merely trying to please his masters.
