Awareness gathering on thalassemia held

SARGODHA, Aug 09 (APP):An awareness meeting was held at Dr. Faisal Masood District Headquarters Hospital, Sargodha.
The chief guest was Dr. Shabnam Basheer, Professor of Pathology, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, Director General, Punjab Thalassemia Program.  Khawaja Arshad and Dr. Yasmeen, Prof. Dr. Amir Ali from Sargodha University, Prof. Mahmood Al Hasan, Prof. Dr. Anwar Al Hasan, Mukhtar Mirza, Allied Industries and Usman Haseeb, founder of Give Life Foundation and its members, Shah Foundation, Sargodha Medical College Student Welfare attended the program.
The purpose of this meeting was to consider suggestions for prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of thalassemia and other hereditary diseases.  Dr. Shabnam Bashir said that awareness about these diseases is very important because their permanent treatment is very complicated and expensive.  A lot of work has been done in Sargodha to alleviate the sufferings of the patients and their relatives.  Special measures are being taken to make Sargodha city thalassemia-free and to prevent hereditary diseases and to provide best treatment for children suffering from them.  Dean Faculty of Sciences Dr. Amir Ali said that awareness is given to students to avoid these diseases and blood camps are organized regularly for children suffering from thalassemia in the university.  Principal Sargodha Medical College, Dr. Waris Farooq, said that hereditary diseases, especially diseases like thalassemia, are an essential part of education.  Organizations are united for this purpose and are working effectively within their respective spheres.  The participants agreed to speed up the awareness campaign and widen the scope of practical measures.
