PESHAWAR, Jan 29 (APP):Veteran politician, senior leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) and former federal minister Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour has announced his retirement from electoral politics at the age of 86.
Addressing a press conference at Bilour House here, Ghulam Ahmad Bilour said he was relocating from Peshawar to Islamabad due to prevailing circumstances, while making it clear that he would continue to play an active role in politics.
Reflecting on his political career, Bilour said he had served the country and the nation for 55 years.
He claimed that those who neither bow nor sell themselves are not allowed to move forward, which, according to him, was the reason he was defeated three times.
Expressing concern over the country’s current political and economic situation, the former federal minister said the country lagged behind on the economic front.
He stressed that the rulers and all political parties must seriously reflect on the country’s challenges.
Bilour underscored the importance of the 18th Constitutional Amendment and said that any attempt to undermine or tamper with the amendment would harm the country.
Referring to internal party electoral decisions, he said he was leaving behind a strong political party but would remain committed to his roots and ideology.
“I am leaving Peshawar, but I will be buried in this soil. I am stepping away from electoral politics, not from politics,” he remarked.
Ghulam Ahmad Bilour said that living alone in Peshawar under the current circumstances was not possible, which prompted his decision to move to Islamabad.
He reaffirmed, however, that his association with national politics and the ANP would continue.
