MULTAN, Jul 25 (APP):The Punjab Agriculture Department (Pest Warning & Quality Control of Pesticides) has launched a major crackdown on illegal sale of toxic phosphine tablets, commonly used for wheat storage.
According to a handout issued here on Friday, the tablets, if mishandled, pose serious threats to human life and the environment, agriculture officers said.
The department conducted eight successful raids across various districts of Punjab, resulting in the seizure of 20,586 phosphine tablets, valued at approximately Rs 544,914. During the operations, six individuals were arrested for their involvement in the illegal trade.
Phosphine was a highly toxic chemical that must only be used under strict expert supervision and specific conditions. Its unauthorized sale and use can lead to fatal consequences, both for public health and ecological safety.
The Agriculture Department affirmed that these actions reflect its unwavering commitment to protecting public health, food security, and ensuring the safe, legal use of agricultural chemicals. Officials have vowed that indiscriminate and continuous legal action will be taken against those involved in illegal pesticide activities across the province.
