RAWALPINDI, Jan 06 (APP):Senior ophthalmologist Dr Tayyab Afghani of Al-Shifa Trust(AST) Eye Hospital has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pakistan Oculoplastic Association at an international eye conference, in recognition of his contributions to specialised eye care and medical education.
Dr Afghani is known for his work in ocular oncology, reconstructive surgery and eye tumors. He played a central role in establishing Pakistan’s first dedicated centre providing free treatment for eye cancer patients, helping to address gaps in access for low-income families.
Conference speakers praised Dr Afghani’s work as head of the Orbit and Oculoplastics Department, describing his role in developing services for complex eye diseases as transformative.
He has authored more than 60 research papers and presented over 70 scientific studies at international conferences in more than 20 countries. His previous honours include the Distinguished Services Award, the Prevention of Blindness Award from the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, and two gold medals from the Ophthalmological Society of Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters, Dr Afghani said the award was an honour for him and for Al-Shifa Trust. He said the hospital had expanded clinical services in line with international standards through sustained investment in infrastructure and training.
The hospital has spent hundreds of millions of rupees on advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment to manage complex orbital and oncology cases, he added.
Dr Afghani also highlighted the Trust’s role in human resource development. Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital is among the country’s largest ophthalmology training centres, with programmes accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. It offers FCPS Part II training, as well as diplomas and fellowships in sub-specialties including paediatric ophthalmology, retina and glaucoma.
Data from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council show the country continues to face shortages of eye specialists, particularly in rural areas, underscoring the need for affordable specialised services not widely available in the public sector.
