ACP pays tribute to renowned fiction writer Abdullah Hussain

KARACHI, Aug 13 (APP):Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi paid tribute to renowned Fiction Writer Abdullah Hussain at Haseena Moin Hall on Tuesday.
The event featured speeches by notable figures including President Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi Muhammad Ahmed Shah, Iqbal Khursheed, Irfan Javed, Akhlaq Ahmed and Mubeen Mirza.
In his address, the President Arts Council of Pakistan, Muhammad Ahmed Shah highlighted Abdullah Hussain’s significant contributions to Urdu literature, noting his esteemed reputation as a fiction writer. He described Hussain as a complex individual whose novels featured strong characters.
Mubeen Mirza noted that the lasting impact of a writer’s work, even after critical review, is a testament to its significance. He compared the cityscapes depicted in Quratulain Hyder’s “Aag Ka Dariya” and Abdullah Hussain’s “Udaas Naslain,” acknowledging that while both novels depict similar settings their narratives and perspectives are distinct.
Akhlaq Ahmed spoke about Hussain’s persona, initially perceived as intimidating but ultimately revealed to be both a skilled writer and historian who chronicled events from World War I to the 1980s from a common person’s perspective. He regarded Hussain as a mentor for many fiction writers, proving that one could be a great writer without being part of literary circles.
Irfan Javed reflected on Hussain’s solitary nature, recalling that even during his student years, Hussain wrote several afsaany, including his first, “Husn Parast,” and preferred concise prose for lengthy sentences. Iqbal Khurshid expressed gratitude to the Arts Council for honoring Abdullah Hussain, emphasizing Hussain’s special bond with the Council and his significant place in Urdu literature.
Khurshid described “Udaas Naslain” as one of the greatest novels in Urdu literature, likening fiction to a flowing river where the story and characters continually evolve.
