PESHAWAR, Nov 04 (APP):Archaeologists have discovered eight more historical sites across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, stretching from Swat to Taxila.
Among the discoveries are the remains of a 1,200-year-old small temple found in Barikot, providing rare evidence of the region’s continuous cultural heritage.
The discoveries were made through joint efforts between Italian archaeologists and the provincial Department of Archaeology. Excavation work has already begun.
According to the Italian Archaeological Mission’s Director, Dr. Luca, the remains of the small temple were uncovered in Barikot (ancient Bazira). Excavation around the site is being expanded toward the Swat River to create a protected buffer zone.
This three-year project, known as “Khyber Path,” began on June 1, 2025 and aims at promoting regional development, professional training and tourism. Over 400 local workers will be employed and trained in excavation, preservation and archaeological techniques.
So far, Italian experts have discovered over 50 historical sites across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ranging from the Stone Age to the eras of Alexander the Great, Buddhism, Hindu Shahi rulers, Greeks and the Islamic period— narrating a complete story of human evolution in the region.
