FAISALABAD, Oct 20 (APP):Punjab Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Public Engineering, Bilal Yasin, has said that the 30-MGD (Million Gallons per Day) Surface Water Treatment Plant project in Faisalabad is a major step toward fulfilling Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s vision of ensuring clean drinking water for the people of Punjab.
During his visit to the French Project Phase-II site on Makkoana Jaranwala Road, the minister stated that the project, once completed, would supply safe drinking water to over 600,000 residents of Faisalabad. He emphasized that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has prioritized access to clean water and is executing a comprehensive plan to achieve this goal.
The Rs. 22 billion mega project is a joint venture between WASA Faisalabad, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the Government of Punjab. It will add 30 MGD to WASA Faisalabad’s current system—increasing the city’s drinking water capacity by 30 percent.
Calling it a state-of-the-art and unprecedented investment in the city’s history, the minister expressed satisfaction over the construction progress in the past three months, which is being supervised by Chinese engineers and technical experts.
Bilal Yasin also visited the JICA Project at Jhal Khanuana, where he received a briefing on operations and praised its performance. He said such projects reflect the government’s dedication to public welfare and urban development.
Director General WASA Punjab, Tayyab Fareed, termed the WASA Faisalabad plant a revolutionary public welfare initiative, poised to benefit both urban and rural populations.
Managing Director WASA, Sohail Qadir Cheema, briefed the minister in detail, highlighting WASA’s focus on mega projects to ensure long-term water security. He noted that the 5-MGD JICA project has recently become operational, while the 30-MGD surface water treatment plant is progressing well and will be completed within its scheduled timeframe.
Project Director French Project Phase-II, Saqib Raza, confirmed that construction began in May–June and is moving ahead rapidly, with completion expected as planned.
Also present on the occasion were Managing Director WASA Lahore Ghufran Ahmed, Deputy Director Development Syed Naveed Shah, Assistant Commissioner Jaranwala Aurangzaib Goraya, and other officials.
