RAWALPINDI, Feb 06 (APP): The Rawalpindi Police arrested 278 professional beggars so far during the ongoing crackdown launched across the city on the directions of City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Mahmood Hamdani, a police spokesman said on Friday.
According to the spokesman, those taken into custody in the drive started some 22 days ago included 129 men, 135 women and 14 transgender persons.
He said special squads were in the field to act against professional beggars, with having strict monitoring on the city’s busy roads and major arteries.
The spokesman said professional beggars often caused traffic disruptions on crowded thoroughfares and inconvenience to citizens, adding that many were also found involved in theft, drug peddling and other crimes.
The crackdown against professional beggars would continue across the city in line with the Punjab chief minister’s vision, he added.
