LAHORE, Jan 10 (APP):Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr Usman Anwar has paid rich tribute to the police martyrs of the GPO Chowk tragedy on its 18th anniversary, saying that Punjab Police salute the brave officers and officials who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
The IG Punjab recalled that on this day in 2008, 16 officers and officials of Punjab Police embraced martyrdom in the tragic incident. Among the martyrs were two Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and 14 police personnel.
Dr Usman Anwar said that the memories of the GPO Chowk martyrs would forever remain alive in the hearts of the nation, adding that every officer and soldier of Lahore Police continues to stand as a frontline force for the protection of the country and its citizens.
He said that the courageous officers and officials who attained martyrdom are a priceless asset of Lahore Police. He further said that employment has been provided in the police department to the families of the GPO Chowk martyrs, and all possible resources are being utilized to ensure the welfare and well-being of the heirs of police martyrs. “The sacrifices of our martyrs serve as a guiding light for all of us,” he added.
Sharing further details, the Punjab Police spokesperson said that those martyred in the GPO Chowk tragedy include ASIs Sheesh Ahmed and Raftaaj Ahmed, and Constables Riaz Ahmed, Naim-ur-Rehman, Asghar Ali, Muhammad Yaqoob, Muhammad Mansha, Zaheer Shaukat, Ijaz Ahmed, and Shahid Ghafoor.
In the same incident, Constables Muhammad Asghar, Muhammad Saleem, Manzoor Ahmed, Muhammad Ehsan, Muhammad Asif, and Shahbaz Ahmed also embraced martyrdom.
