LAHORE, Aug 29 (APP):The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) on Saturday destroyed 1,000 kilograms of rotten and foul-smelling meat during an operation against an illegal slaughterhouse in Al-Madina Colony,Shahdara, on the directions of Punjab Chief Minister(CM),Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The operation was conducted on the directions of PFA Director General(DG),Raja Mansoor Ahmed.
The slaughterhouse had already been sealed but meat was allegedly being prepared there without permission,the DG said.
The slaughterhouse owner allegedly attempted to obstruct government officials during the operation, resulting in damage to an official vehicle.
His attempt to flee from the scene was foiled and he was arrested, while a case was also registered against him.
The DG PFA said the meat was found heavily infested with flies while the storage area was also in extremely poor hygienic condition.
A veterinary specialist conducted a detailed inspection of the meat at the site and declared it unfit and hazardous for human consumption.
The DG said mandatory records,tagging,license and other required documents were not available at the slaughterhouse.
The slaughtering area was found with open drains, broken flooring, stagnant dirty water and foul odour.
DG Raja Mansoor Ahmed said food businesses must operate strictly in accordance with the rules and regulations prescribed by the Punjab Food Authority.
Under the Chief Minister’s vision, elements involved in adulteration and compromising the food consumed by children and adults would not be given any concession, he added.
He said operations against the health-damaging mafia were continuing under a zero-tolerance policy and urged citizens to report any food-related complaint to the PFA helpline 1223.
