FAISALABAD, Jul 28 (APP): University of Kamalia has led the way with groundbreaking of community-supported scholarship initiative.
University of Kamalia Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Yasir Nawab said that in public sector universities across Pakistan, thousands of brilliant but underprivileged students face a harsh reality. They are expected to pay their first semester’s fee out of pocket often by taking loans or even selling their family’s valuables such as jewelry.
Many deserving students are left behind entirely as they are unable to step into a university classroom simply due to financial constraints, he added.
He said that although several scholarship programs become available after admission such as the Chief Minister’s Honhar Merit Scholarship, HEC Need-Based Scholarships and University Merit Awards, yet the upfront cost at the time of admission remains a critical barrier for many families.
To break this cycle, the University of Kamalia in collaboration with its local community has taken a bold and compassionate step. It has launched a first-of-its-kind initiative to ensure that no student who secures admission on merit is denied the opportunity to study due to lack of finances. Under this program, students who are unable to afford their initial fees are fully sponsored by the community from day one, he added.
He said that as of now, nearly 200 exceptionally talented students, accounting for 20% of the total intake, have been admitted under this scheme, with their fees fully sponsored for the entire four-year degree program or until they secure support through another scholarship initiative.
With this visionary move, the University of Kamalia has become the first public sector university in Punjab to implement a community-sponsored financial support model at the admission stage, he added.
He said that this initiative is a remarkable example of public-private partnership in education and serves as a model of access, equity and social responsibility.
