KARACHI, Sep 11 (APP):Tax reforms, digitalisation and the growing use of technology are significantly transforming the role of tax professionals, with greater emphasis on compliance, transparency, efficiency and broadening of the tax base, said Taimur Ahmed Khan, a Pakistani tax professional working in Australia.
Talking to APP, Taimur said evolving tax systems were changing the way taxpayers, businesses and professionals interacted with tax authorities, making a sound understanding of tax regulations and compliance requirements increasingly important for those working in the sector.
He said the experience of Pakistani professionals working abroad also demonstrated the importance of education, continuous professional development and the ability to adapt to different regulatory and workplace environments.
Moving to Australia, he said, represented both an educational opportunity and a personal challenge, requiring him to adapt to a different professional environment, regulatory framework and workplace culture while establishing his career.
“Education is often the first step, but building a professional career abroad requires patience, adaptability and a willingness to learn,” he said, adding that progress in a new environment was often gradual and depended on understanding local regulations, workplace expectations and professional responsibilities.
Taimur said, he is currently working as a Tax Accountant at MRKM Accountants in Sydney, where his responsibilities include preparing individual and business tax returns, Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS).
He also prepares profit and loss reports and briefs company directors on financial results, while dealing with compliance requirements involving the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) and Australian Business Register (ABR).
He said his work as a tax adviser extended beyond preparing tax returns, as he also advised companies on tax-saving opportunities and planning for future tax obligations based on their annual financial position. “The work is detailed and deadline-driven, and accuracy is essential because compliance decisions can have a direct impact on businesses and employees,” he added.
Taimur informed that he also works with a range of accounting and financial management platforms, including QuickBooks, MYOB, HandiTax and HandiLedger, which support bookkeeping, reporting and client-accounting processes. He is a member of the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA), reflecting his continued engagement with the professional accounting sector in Australia.
He said accurate and timely tax and financial work played an important practical role in helping businesses meet their statutory obligations, maintain sound records and make informed decisions.
Alongside his professional career, Taimur has also represented Mosman Cricket Club as an all-rounder in the NSW Premier League, combining his professional responsibilities with his sporting interests.
For aspiring Pakistani professionals seeking careers abroad, Taimur emphasised the importance of acquiring relevant qualifications, understanding the regulatory environment of the host country and remaining committed to continuous learning.
He said professional growth was not necessarily defined by rapid success but by the ability to adapt, develop specialised skills and consistently meet professional responsibilities in a changing environment
