Promotion of environment-friendly transport top priority: Mujtaba

LAHORE, Apr 25 (APP):Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman attended as chief guest, the launching ceremony of a new hybrid vehicle by a leading automobile company here on Saturday. Addressing the ceremony, he said that promotion of modern, environment-friendly transport is an urgent priority, and Punjab government is actively advancing alternative energy solutions in the transport sector to not only safeguard the environment but also provide sustainable and cost-effective mobility options to the public.
The Finance Minister highlighted that special concessions are already being offered on the registration of electric vehicles in Punjab. In line with the special directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, government departments will prioritize the procurement of electric and hybrid vehicles in the coming years. He shared that upcoming provincial budget will include a dedicated scheme for establishment of electric vehicle charging stations. To enhance public affordability, a proposal to reduce duties on electric vehicles has also been forwarded to the federal government and is currently under consideration.
Addressing the broader economic context, the Finance Minister noted that the government is taking comprehensive measures to mitigate the impact of rising global petroleum prices. He stated that the federal government has provided a fuel subsidy amounting to Rs. 129 billion over the past two months. In Punjab, free public transport facilities have been extended to ease the burden on citizens. Additionally, as part of austerity measures, government fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 50 percent, and the provision of free fuel for cabinet members has been withdrawn. The Punjab Government is also contributing its share to support goods transportation, ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and preventing additional pressure on the public.
The Finance Minister said that in the event of further increases in fuel prices, the provincial government may consider facilitative measures for users of efficient bicycles, promoting affordable and environmentally friendly modes of transport. He emphasized that these initiatives are aimed at public relief and economic stability, and their effectiveness relies on public cooperation.
He also observed that regulated business hours in commercial centers are a widely practiced international norm, contributing to improved energy efficiency and better economic discipline. The Government of Punjab remains committed to pursuing sustainable development, efficient energy utilization, and policies centered on public welfare.
