New FCCI leadership urged to uphold ethics, discipline and policy continuity

FAISALABAD, Oct 05 (APP):National Group leader/former president Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) Mian Muhammad Adrees said that the newly elected office-bearers of Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) must rise above personal interests, understand the limits of their authority and introduce fresh initiatives with a service-oriented approach to strengthen business community, chamber’s institutional standing and reputation of the National Group.
Addressing the concluding session of a one-day training and awareness workshop organized for the new FCCI Executive Committee, he delivered a detailed lecture on “Code of Conduct: Ethics and Protocols” and emphasized that disciplined teamwork, transparency, confidentiality and respect for institutional procedures were essential for effective chamber leadership.
Mian Muhammad Adrees said that FCCI President Arif Ehsan Malik, being chief executive officer of the chamber for current year, would lead the organization and members of the Executive Committee should work as supportive members of his team by utilizing their respective capabilities and expertise.
He said that entire city and business community were looking towards the newly elected office-bearers and their performance would determine the evaluation of both FCCI and National Group. Therefore, they should fully understand their responsibilities and discharge their duties with discipline and commitment, he added.
He said that FCCI was a large institution requiring collective efforts while the president needed an effective team to run its affairs. The president in consultation with Executive Committee members and on the basis of recommendations from conveners of standing committees sets policies and targets for business community, city and country. Later, these policies and targets are pursued throughout the year, he added.
He said that National Group had maintained continuity in FCCI leadership for the past three decades and stressed the need for institutional memory and continuity of policies.
He proposed that the outgoing president and standing committees should provide written details to the incoming leadership at the end of their tenure regarding achievements under their roadmap as well as incomplete targets.
Such documentation would help the new leadership to carry forward ongoing initiatives, resolve business community issues more effectively and contribute to the city’s comprehensive, organized and coordinated development, he added.
He described FCCI as a respected elected platform representing the business community and said that elected office-bearers should remain mindful of their conduct, communication, lifestyle and overall personality because their individual behavior also reflected upon the institution.
National Group leader urged Executive Committee members to serve the city selflessly and rise above personal considerations, saying that ethical, social and professional conduct would benefit not only FCCI but also their own businesses.
He cautioned the members against bypassing the president or using their official positions in an unauthorized manner. Each Executive Committee member represented a particular business sector and he should identify its issues through consultation and discussion and then present practical and workable recommendations for their resolution, he added.
He also called for digitalization of standing committee performance so that the president could monitor progress of committees through a dashboard and assess their performance in a timely manner.
Mian Muhammad Adrees stressed that FCCI was a non-political and non-profit institution and its financial interests must be protected with a strong sense of ethical and moral responsibility. He said that the chamber’s revenues constituted public money and therefore demanded the highest standards of financial responsibility and transparency.
He also urged the members to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive institutional matters.
He said that the president had been provided with National Group’s manifesto at the time of his nomination and advised him to maintain close coordination with the outgoing president as well as keep the incoming president informed about ongoing policies and initiatives to ensure continuity from one term to the next.
Mian Muhammad Adrees expressed confidence in the new Executive Committee, noting that it comprised a greater number of young and educated members.
He hoped that they would demonstrate their capabilities through performance, discipline and teamwork and become a source of good reputation for the business community, FCCI and the National Group.
National Group leader Mian Javed Iqbal while speaking on the occasion highlighted important milestones in FCCI’s history and the experiences of its past leadership.
He said that FCCI efforts had contributed to the establishment of Faisalabad Dry Port, described as Pakistan’s first dry port in the private sector, besides playing a key role in initiatives related to value addition, the Garment City and industrial estates.
He said that every president elected under the National Group had served the city and business community to best of his abilities, adding that none of the presidents had returned for a second term.
He said that the members who demonstrated strong performance, discipline and team spirit would establish their credentials for future leadership of the chamber.
Mian Javed Iqbal advised the present leadership to identify five or six priority projects for the year and pursue them with clear objectives. These could include initiatives relating to the airport, M-3 Link Road and Expo Center, etc., he added.
He also stressed that completing every project within a single tenure should not be the sole measure of success. More importantly, the outgoing leadership should formally hand over details of incomplete initiatives to the incoming team so that the new leadership could continue work from the point where the previous team had left it, he advised.
Master trainer Wali Zahid, former FCCI presidents Rizwan Ashraf, Shabbir Hussain Chawla and Rana Muhammad Sikandar Azam Khan also addressed the awareness workshop and responded to questions raised by Executive Committee members.
Later, Mian Muhammad Adrees and Mian Javed Iqbal along with FCCI President Arif Ehsan Malik distributed certificates among the workshop participants.
Senior Vice President FCCI Mian Muhammad Saeed and Vice President Muhammad Yasin were also present on the occasion.
