ISLAMABAD, Jul 3 (APP): The pulse production posted strong gains as gram production surged by 50.4 percent and Moong output increased by 15.2 percent during the crop season 2025-26 as compared to the production of the corresponding period of the last year.
During the season the output of gram pulse was recorded at 258.6 thousand tons and moong production was registered at 151.1 thousand tons, respectively, which would help to reduce the reliance on imported pulses, said a official in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.
Talking to APP here on Friday, he said that the gram was cultivated over 258,000 hectare during 2025-26 as compared to the cultivation of 707,000 hectares of same period of the last year.
However, the production of red lentils (Masoor) and white lentils (Maash), decreased by 8 percent and 3.7 percent respectively, he said adding that the Masoor output was recorded 4,000 tons as the crop was cultivated over 5.5 thousand hectares and Mash 5,000 tons, which was cultivated over 6.8 thousand hectares.
He said that the government has introduced measures for enhancing the pulses production and bringing the more areas under different pulses cultivation. He said that availability of certified and high-yielding seeds and supply of other inputs were ensured to increase the area under pulses cultivation
Over 1.282 million metric tons of pulses worth $754.006 million were imported during the first eleven months of the current financial year as compared to the imports of 1.400 million metric tons valued at $969.976 million of the same period of the last year.
