ISLAMABAD, Sep 10 (APP):British International Investment (BII) here on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to Pakistan and signalled interest in exploring fresh investment opportunities, as the UK-backed development finance institution looks to expand its investment footprint and mobilise greater private capital in the country.
The development came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and BII Managing Director and Head of Asia Srini Nagarajan, where the two sides discussed BII’s investment plans and opportunities to deepen its engagement with Pakistan’s private sector.
The talks covered a broad range of areas, including infrastructure and climate finance, private equity, SME financing and emerging opportunities linked to Pakistan’s ongoing economic and structural reforms, with a focus on unlocking greater private investment across priority sectors.
Nagarajan was accompanied by Mr. Imtiaz Saithna, Head Pakistan; Ms. Reema Gani, Manager Pakistan; Mr. Sam Waldock, Development Director, FCDO; and Mr. Zaigham Iqbal, Investment Manager.
Nagarajan briefed the Finance Minister on BII’s 2026–31 strategy, under which it plans to invest at least US$2 billion across Asia and Africa, with a significant focus on South Asia and frontier markets.
He identified Pakistan as a key investment destination and said BII was interested in significantly expanding its footprint in the country, particularly through private capital mobilisation.
The delegation highlighted opportunities in infrastructure, climate finance, renewable energy, financial services, technology, private equity, private credit and SME financing.
It also welcomed Pakistan’s capital-market reforms and expressed interest in supporting the development of investable projects and financing structures, including in power transmission and climate-related investments.
Senator Aurangzeb welcomed BII’s commitment, citing improved macroeconomic stability, investor confidence, the US three billion dollars international bond issuance, privatisation progress and successive sovereign credit-rating upgrades.
He briefed the delegation on reforms in taxation, energy, tariffs, capital markets and digitalisation, as well as initiatives to strengthen private equity and expand access to finance.
Both sides agreed to maintain engagement and pursue concrete investment and private-capital mobilisation opportunities in Pakistan.
