MULTAN, Jan 20 (APP):Work has officially started on WASA ‘s $10 million urban flooding mega project, funded as a grant by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). A team of KOICA experts has arrived in Multan to conduct surveys and prepare a master plan for the project.
Under the agreement between the WASA Multan and the KOICA, underground water tanks will be constructed in low-lying areas to mitigate flooding during heavy rainfall. The project also includes capacity-building programmes for WASA employees to enhance their skills in urban flood management.
Managing Director WASA, Khalid Raza Khan, stated that the master plan would significantly help tackle urban flooding risks and strengthen WASA’s operational capacity. He called the project a milestone in improving public service delivery and addressing flood emergencies.
Project Coordinator and Deputy Director of Planning and Design, Muhammad Nadeem, highlighted the severe monsoon rains of 2024, which recorded 172mm of rainfall on August 27. Over two days, August 27 and 28, the city experienced a total of 235mm of rain, breaking the previous record of 134mm set in 1976.
The project aims to provide significant relief to urban areas of Multan during future monsoon seasons and improve emergency response capabilities.
