National seminar on Genetic Disorders held at KMU

PESHAWAR, Oct 25 (APP):Khyber Medical University (KMU), in collaboration with Dosti Welfare Organization and National Commission for Human Development, organized the third National Seminar on Genetic Disorders on Wednesday.
Prominent genetic research and health experts of the country, health care professionals, VC KMU Prof Dr. Zia Ul Haq, Registrar KMU Inam Ullah Khan Wazir, faculty members, and a large number of students participated.
The seminar began with an opening address by Dr. Inayat Shah, the Director KMU Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS). He highlighted the important role played by institutions like KMU in advancing the progress of genetic research, which has set many milestones in scientific research and public health efforts.
Other speakers at the seminar included:Prof. Dr. Shahtaj Khan, Head, Department of Pathology, Rehman Medical Institute: She spoke on the complications of hemophilia, an inherited genetic disorder that inhibits the body’s ability to form blood clots effectively.
Dr. Musharraf Jelani, Director of the Centre for Omic Sciences at Islamia College University Peshawar: He addressed the topic of whole exome sequencing, a powerful technique that is revolutionizing the diagnosis of a wide spectrum of genetic diseases.
Dr. Yasir Mehmood Yousafzai, Director PHRL KMU:He highlighted the scope of genetic testing focusing on his diagnosis of thalassemia,a genetic blood disorder.
Dr Muhammad Zakaria, in-charge of the AGCT Public Health Reference Lab KMU: He unveiled the practical deployment of Sanger sequencing to identify mutations associated with rare genetic disorders.
Dr. Arsalan Hassan, a lecturer at the Pharmacy Department of the University of Peshawar:He discussed the burgeoning field of polygenic risk scores,which involve the assessment of multiple genetic factors to gauge an individual’s susceptibility to various diseases.
Vice Chancellor of FATA University Kohat Prof Dr. Jahanzeb Khan highlighted the important impact of the seminar on genetic research and health care.
In his address, Vice Chancellor KMU Prof. Dr. Zia ul Haq said that hereditary disorders affect a significant portion of Pakistan’s population and urgently need to be tackled. He congratulated Dr. Inayat Shah for organizing the seminar, and Muhammad Irfan and other initiators for organizing the National Seminar on Genetic Disorders.
The seminar was a valuable opportunity for experts and stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences on the latest advances in genetic research and healthcare. It also provided a platform for raising awareness of genetic disorders and the importance of early detection and prevention.
