Gilgit-Baltistan being fully included in CPEC through eco-friendly projects

ISLAMABAD, Oct 31 (APP): Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is being fully included in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) through Eco-friendly economic projects in different areas.
A regional grid for Gilgit-Baltistan is being established, plus a plan for tourism on Attabad lake, Khunjerab-Islamabad fibre optic cable, initiative for mining of minerals, hydel projects, upgradation of KKH highway, establishing an Engineering University and a Medical College, official sources in the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform said here on Monday.
The Pakistan-China Economic Corridor (CPEC) passing through Gilgit-Baltistan in the north to reach the Gwadar port in the south of the country would bring prosperity in the country, especially in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The Corridor would prove as a milestone in the history and it would also promote the tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, which would ultimately in the favour of local public.
According to experts, the CPEC will boost tourism of 73,000 sq kilometers region, which is called a paradise for mountaineers and is home to five of highest peaks above 8,000 meters as well as more than 50 mountains over 7,000 meters besides being home to the world’s second highest peak K-2 and the Nanga Parbat.
They said, Gilgit-Baltistan has potential to generate over 30,000 megawatts of electricity, which should be harnessed.
According to official sources, a food processing plant would be set up near Gilgit to enhance export of fruits being produced in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
The required land would be purchased from the locals to set up the plant.
According to Asian Development Bank (ADB), Gilgit-Baltistan is the producer of over 100,000 metric tons of fresh apricots annually.
This area also produce an estimated 4,000 tons of cherries and 20,000 tons of apples.
A free trade zone would also be established in Gilgit-Baltistan to boost trade and business opportunities besides creating jobs for local businessmen and educated youth.
The shifting of dry port from Sust to Havailian would further benefit the people.
